Pulp Description

Pulp descriptions in dentistry books and literature have a complex explanation beyond what our dental patients must know

Muyal Dentistry in Toronto and Thornhill aim to inform dental patients by reading our website about Pulp's essential functions and use in dentistry to help them communicate with dental practitioners.

We know that many visitors to our website can't become Dr. Muyal's patients in Toronto or Thornhill since they live far away, but we still appreciate their time here.

The Anatomy is explained best with the attached Tooth-Pulp animation:

Tooth Cross-section with Pulp highlight

Tooth Elements as per Cross Section

  • Crown - the visible part of the Tooth above the Neck.
  • Enamel is the hardest element in the body and is the Tooth's protective shield.
  • Dentin - it is the mass between the Pulp and the Crown. Dentin protects tooth Pulp and supports the hard outer layer called Enamel.
  • Bone - is the mass structure where Teeth are embodied.
  • Pulp - is the Heart of the Tooth encapsulated by Dentin. The blood supply to the Pulp is indicated on the drawings, and two main types of nerves are found inside.

What is Pulp and its Anatomy?

It is the heart of your Tooth, the accumulation of innermost vascularized and innervated tissue in the enclosed Pulp Chamber.

The single frame of our animated image, "Tooth Pulp - Cross Section," highlights the Pulp placement within the Tooth structure.

Pulp provides vital nutrients to your Tooth. Dentin and Enamel encapsulate and protect the Pulp at the outer layer.

At this point, it should become evident to any patient that Pulp is vital and that the patient should protect it with 'proper dental care. '

If you grind your teeth, suffer from bruxism, and neglect cavities or cracks in your Enamel, damage to the Enamel might reach and affect the Pulp.

Exposure of your Pulp to outer elements:

Exposure to your Pulp can happen when untreated cavities reach the Pulp, or there is an accidental rupture in your Tooth. Sports or other accidents are likely causes.

If patients neglect dental care, the cavity will reach the Pulp, the bacteria will also enter the Pulp, and inflammation will develop.

These are primary functions of the Pulp;

Stages of Pulp's Development:

The bud - a band of cells that proliferate and produce a bud- protruded into adjoining ectomesenchyme (cells).

Cap - becomes when the epithelial bud grows larger and becomes a concave-shaped cap. When the oral epithelial and mesenchymal cells change to enamel organs and dental papillae sequentially.

Bell stage - takes place.
